- Gluten-free options
Smith’s Authentic British Fish and Chips has been around in Singapore since 2006. Owned by 2 British gentlemen, this shop serves up authentic British-style fish and chips as well as other British classics such as English farmhouse sausages, Steak and Guinness and Chicken and Mushroom pies.
Gluten-free options on the menu are their signature Fish and Chips, which is available every Tuesday! Their gluten-free batter also does not contain any egg or dairy, great for those who cannot tolerate these ingredients.

British-style fish and chips typically uses cod or haddock, though other white fish such as plaice or pollock may be used. The fish is usually filleted, dipped in a light, crispy batter, and deep-fried until golden and crunchy on the outside while remaining tender and flaky on the inside.
For the chips, British-style chips are described as thick-cut, chunky fries. They are made from potatoes cut into large pieces and double-fried for a crisp exterior and fluffy interior.
This meal is traditionally eaten with salt and vinegar and sides like mushy peas or curry sauce.

We ordered the classic cod and haddock fish and chips.
Condiments such as Heinz tomato ketchup, chili sauce, vinegar and salt are provided on the tables to go with your fish and chips.

Both the haddock and the cod were very good. The golden brown exterior was perfectly fried and incredibly light, airy and crispy! The fish was fresh and the inside was moist, succulent and flaky, characteristics of a well-made fish and chip 🙂
I do want to point out that they have intentionally left the batter and fish relatively unseasoned so that you can season it to your liking, either the traditional way with salt and vinegar, or with the other sauces available.

The chips were unfortunately not the crispy chip I was expecting. They were a bit soggy and despite having the classic fluffy inside, these chunky chips were not crunchy.
As to whether the haddock or cod was better, I find it very difficult to choose as both were very good. Haddock is slightly sweeter and has a stronger “seafood-like” taste, whereas cod leans a little more mild to neutral in terms of taste. Someone who generally likes the “seafood” or “fishy” (in a good way) kind of taste should definitely go for the haddock.
Overall a good place to try some authentic British comfort food, gluten-free!
