The mozarella-pesto grilled sandwich that I had was pretty good. Pesto, cheese and crispy bread is definitely a winning combo! The other standout would be the pistachio roll. The pistachio butter was thick and creamy and paired well with the fluffy savoury roll.

What’s good: Goulash soup, Beef tenderloin with lyon onion and french fries

Bohemtanya is a 100 percent gluten-free and lactose-free restaurant that is family owned and run since 1975. They serve traditional Hungarian food that is close to the homemade taste. Do go there hungry as they serve in large, generous portions!

Beef tenderloin with lyon onion and french fries

The goulash soup was full-flavoured and hearty. It also comes with a side of chili if you’re a spice lover and want to amp up the heat of your soup.

I have not been able to try any schnitzels during my trip to east Europe as they always contain eggs due to the batter. There are however other good options on the menu such as the beef tenderloin, grilled pike perch and pork chop.

I had the beef tenderloin with lyon onion and french fries which was quite good. I must say I enjoyed the crispy onions the most! Gluten-free onion rings are hard to find and its such a treat eating them. They were very crispy and flavourful!

Cuisine: Hungarian

Address: Bajcsy-Zsilinszky ut 25, 1065 Hungary – Map

At this relaxed eatery, you will be able to find a popular Hungarian street food known as Langos, which is a deep fried flatbread commonly topped with garlic, sour cream and cheese.

They offer Langos with a variety of different toppings, with vegan and gluten-free options available also for those with dietary restrictions. There is a dedicated gluten-free menu so do look out for that when ordering. Vegan cheese and sour cream can be requested for those who are dairy-free.

What’s good: Vegetarian langos, Hungarian langos

svg+xml;charset=utf
GF Vegetarian – sour cream, cheese, tomato, red onion, olive
svg+xml;charset=utf
GF Rustic – sour cream, cheese, sausage, red onion
*pls note that the sausage is not vegan

The flatbread itself was not bad, with a crispy edge and fluffly inside. The toppings were fresh, though I wasn’t too sure about the cheese not being melted. I think it would have definitely tasted better if all the toppings were warm and the cheese melted.

A microwave is available for heating up your langos should you prefer and I did see a rare 2 people heat up their langos.

I was literally like a kid in the candy store here, as there were so many items I could eat here. Every item had a label with allergens marked, and I just had to look out for those that were vegan as they would not contain any dairy or eggs.

My top picks here would be the rolls. Adequate sweetness with a soft and light texture. The apple pie and ham croissant were not bad too, though I felt that the filling was a bit too little. More filling would have made it more satisfying to eat!

The pizzas here were literally the BEST I’ve ever eaten! They have definitely perfected the crust – perfectly aged dough with amazing flavour and texture that is crispy on the edge and fluffy on the  inside. The toppings were equally flavourful and every bite was a literal flavour explosion 🤩

The minestrone soup was amazing as well. Lots of veggies in the soup with great flavour.

Do put this place at the top of your “must-visit” list if you ever visit Budapest!

I had the grilled salmon sandwich which was really good. The ciabatta was wonderfully crisp on the outside and the horseradish cream paired really well with the salmon.

The waffles were delicious as well, spot on in taste and texture for a GF and vegan product. No weird aftertaste like some GF ones I’ve tried before, really good!

The bean goulash was pretty good. Not lacking in flavour whatsoever compared to a non-vegan one.

I also enjoyed my plate of oven-grilled veggies and fries very much. Sounds like a pretty basic dish but it definitely satisfies that healthy and unhealthy craving all in one go, especially when paired with that yummy garlic tartar sauce!

I thought the vegan Quattro one sounded amazing as I’ve not seen or tried one before. It is topped with vegan mozarella, vegan smoked cream cheese, vegan emmental cheese and vegan cheddar.

Many also rave about their tomato base, so do try it if you ever visit!

What’s good: Salted peanut butter ice pop with dark chocolate and coconut chips

A plant-based dessert shop that sells ice pops, acai and smoothies, everything on the menu is natural and made from real fruits and quality ingredients.

I love the fact that you can craft your own ice pops according to the flavours, dips and toppings you like. They have up to 30 different ice pop flavours, milk, dark and white chocolate dips and up to 8 different toppings to choose from.

Left: Rio Calling (organic acai, granola, banana, blueberries, freeze-dried coconut flakes, chia seeds)
Right: Nuthead (organic acai, granola, peanut butter, banana, roasted hazelnuts, chia seeds)

I thoroughly enjoyed my salted peanut butter ice pop with dark chocolate and coconut chips. Everything about it was amazing and surprisingly, the coconut chips added such a wonderful contrast in flavours and textures to the ice pop, being roasted to perfection and super crispy!

The acai bowls were excellent as well. I would consider myself an acai snob and this is acai done right. Not too sour, not too sweet and not too icy. Nothing artificial, just organic acai, bananas and rice milk. Healthy acai done right 👍🏻

Edes Macko

  • Gluten, dairy and egg-free options
Cuisine: Cafe, Hungarian

Address: Allatkerti krt. 14-16, 1146 Hungary – Map

What’s good: Cocoa chimney cake

In Budapest, you will see lots of shops selling chimney cakes, which is a traditional Hungarian pastry called Kurtoskalacs. This is the only place I was able to find gluten, dairy and egg-free chimney cake!

The gluten-free option is only available on Wednesday and Friday, so do make sure to put this into consideration when planning your visit there!
svg+xml;charset=utf
Left: Pistachio roll
Right: Cocoa roll
svg+xml;charset=utf
Left: Hot chocolate with regular milk and whipped cream
Right: Hot chocolate with rice milk

Taste-wise the chimney cakes were not bad, however I did not like the aftertaste it gave, which is common when chickpea flour is used. I think a different flour blend would have made it taste better. Though I must say not everyone might detect it since my husband couldn’t. Regardless this place is still worth a visit to try the famed chimney cake!

Drinks wise they were a bit too sweet and thick for my liking. Many say the coffee is good so I’d recommend that instead of the chocolate.

A cute little cafe that sells pretty cakes in the Buda side, this cafe has a few gluten-free and vegan cakes that we can eat. Check with staff directly which are the gluten-free and vegan ones as the it can be a bit confusing trying to look through all of them.
Their offerings for the free-from cakes are small, maybe about 2-3 options. I ordered them to-go so that I can have a mini picnic up at the Fisherman’s Bastion.

I really enjoyed the blueberry cake. It tasted almost like a fruit cake, with a lovely sweet blueberry compote on top.

The avocado chocolate cake was a bit too coconut-y for me, though my husband liked it better than the blueberry one.
