With my penchant for all things sweet, I was really craving for some good cakes and pastries and my search led me to a vegan high tea offered by The Lobby Lounge at Intercontinental Singapore.
Their original menu caters only to a vegan diet, but I had enquired via Instagram if they could do a vegan and gluten-free high tea and they got back saying they could! Needless to say I was thrilled! 😁 I made a reservation 1 week in advance, and would recommend you do the same to give them ample notice.
The Vegan Afternoon Tea cost $55 per person on a weekday and $60 per person on a weekend, not including service charge and GST, and this includes a serving of coffee or tea.
This is the original vegan menu:
For my curated gluten-free set, the grilled impossible slider, banana peanut cake, pineapple tofu mascarpone cake and lemon cheese tart were swapped out for a potato and pepper stack, white chocolate-coated strawberry, pecan cake and mochi.
The savoury items were a standout for me 🤩 The summer vegetable tart was beautifully buttery and crisp, and the flavours of the pesto, tomato jam and thyme really melded well with the medley of veggies used.
I didn’t catch the name of the second savoury item but it was made up of two potato pieces sandwiched with some grilled peppers. The texture of the potatoes were buttery and almost flaky, similar to that of pastry, which I was pleasantly surprised. I liken it to Million Layer Potatoes, absolutely yummy! Grilled peppers and potatoes are one of my favourite foods so this was a definite win 😋
The Egg Mayo and Cheddar Cheese Sandwich was also pretty good and tasted almost like the real deal, which was really interesting. The multigrain bread was also beautifully fluffy and not too dense like most GF bread.
Scones are one of my favourite things to eat and GF and vegan ones are impossible to find in Singapore, so I’m glad to be able to eat them here. There are a bit on the cakier side, but otherwise still very yummy. Pairing them with the strawberry rose and fig jam topped with whipped cream was such a treat! The whipped cream also had thinly sliced almonds in them which elevated the experience.
For the sweet items, my favourite would be the Palm Sugar Panna Cotta and White Chocolate Strawberries. The Panna Cotta was basically Cendol reinvented, with pandan-flavoured jelly atop a silky soy custard, drizzled with gula melaka that comes in a cute little pipette that added a fun touch to the dessert.
The Green Apple Chocolate Pot didn’t pale in comparison and was my husband’s favourite. I thought that it was the prettiest looking dessert on the table 😍 The poached apple filling was not too sweet and slightly tangy, and contrasted well with the sweet chocolate pot and vanilla mousse.
The mochi had a skin which was not very mochi-like as it was neither stretchy nor chewy, but the dessert itself was albeit interesting and was filled with a mousse and jam filling. The pecan cake was pretty normal-tasting and I was secretly wanting it to be a cookie instead! 😆
They have a good selection of decaffeinated teas from TWG to choose from. Something I appreciate since I’m really sensitive to caffeine. My husband chose the Choco Mint Truffle, which is a rooibos tea with vanilla, chocolate and mint. This tea was on the stronger and bolder side if you prefer something strong. I chose Jade Cascade, which is a lighter tea made from decaffeinated green tea leaves and notes of tropical fruits.
Both teas were lovely and we enjoyed them. Pretty raw sugar crystal sticks were provided if you want to sweeten your tea.
The high tea also comes with a free-flow of sorbet from their ice cream trolley. Only two flavours were available and one out of the two being vegan. A nice way to end the high tea off nonetheless.
