I first came across the brand LEDA while holidaying in Perth, looking for suitable snacks to buy while at an IGA supermarket.

LEDA is an Australian-owned brand that does gluten-free, dairy-free and plant-based snacks. Their range consists of fruit-filled snack bars, rice cakes, cookies and crackers. Their bakehouse is completely gluten-free, making their snacks safe for coeliacs as well.

Their Choculence and Minton biscuits caught my eye immediately at the store as they are an exact dupe for Arnott’s Tim Tam and Mint Slice, sans all the gluten, dairy and eggs! You can imagine my excitement 😄

These biscuits are also palm oil free, something that LEDA is passionate on eliminating from all their products as they strive to source from reputable and ethical sources only, as palm oil has been a major driver of deforestation and habitat destruction. Another reason to love this brand more 😃

Choculence

Ingredients: Chocolate (30%)(sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, emulsifier (sunflower lecithin)), sugar, tapioca flour, rice bran oil, chickpea flour, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, natural flavours, raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), salt

These biscuits are described as a chocolate-coated sandwich biscuit with a creamy chocolate filling. These tasted amazing and exactly like Tim Tams from what I can remember, all the way from the biscuit to the cream filling.

I have also tried Woolworths’ Tim Tam dupe – the Free From Double Chocolate Biscuit, but find that LEDA was the better dupe.

Firstly, the chocolate coating for the Woolies chocolate biscuit was far too thin and unsatisfying. LEDA’s biscuit had the right amount of chocolate enrobed over the biscuit. My second gripe about the Woolies biscuit was that it was way too hard! When you first sink your teeth into it, you stop short as you cannot bite through it easily! You do not get that satisfying crunch when biting into a biscuit, but instead an oddly hard and dry biscuit.

Minton

Ingredients: Chocolate (35%)(sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, emulsifier (sunflower lecithin)), sugar, tapioca flour, rice bran oil, chickpea flour, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, natural flavours, raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), salt, peppermint oil

These biscuits are described as a dark chocolate coated biscuit with a mint cream filling. Similar to Choculence, I find them to be an exact dupe to Arnott’s. From the rich dark chocolate coating to the biscuit and mint cream, these could definitely satisfy any sweet cravings.

I have also tried the Woolworth’s dupe, Free From Gluten Mint Creme Biscuit and definitely preferred LEDA. Although the chocolate coating was not as thin for the mint one, my issue was with the biscuit which was way too hard. It definitely affected the experience of enjoying the cookie.

In my opinion, LEDA has absolutely nailed this gluten-free, plant-based version of Australia’s favourite chocolate biscuit. Try it! You won’t be disappointed!
