Cultivate Cafe is a gluten-free and vegan restaurant located in the beautiful Maxwell Reserve Hotel.
They serve up plant-based, GMO-free dishes made from the finest organic ingredients sourced locally and globally from small and family farms.
The decor of the restaurant is reminiscent to that of an old school library, taking inspiration from European grandeur infused with cosmopolitan sophistication. The place a dimly lit, with what seems to me like a baroque style of furniture and finishings.
As you enter the restaurant, there is a panel of glass display cabinets containing drinks, desserts and some pantry items.
The variety of glorious gluten-free vegan desserts in the display really caught my eye here 🤩
For starters, we had the Leek and Roasted Pumpkin Tart along with a cold pressed juice and smoothie.
The tart was pretty special in my opinion and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The buttery sautéed leeks that lined the bottom of the tart was beautifully sweet and oniony. It was topped off with a luxurious and smooth pumpkin puree in a buttery and crisp tart. A stellar start to the meal!
The juice was a refreshing mix of cold-pressed celery, green apple, lemon, cucumber and ginger. It struck a fantastic balance, offering a mild sweetness that complemented the veggies in the juice very well.
The smoothie was a mix of blueberries, banana, lemon, mint, charred honey pineapple and blue spirulina. This tasted like your classic blueberry and banana combo. The flavour of the charred pineapple and mint didn’t quite come through in this one.
For mains, we had the Vegan Burger and Satisfying Sandwich.
The burger consisted of a grilled portobello mushroom topped with a bed of roasted peppers, onions and fresh arugula. I expected the peppers be a little drier and smokier, but they were on the juicier side and the smoky taste was not distinguishable. Overall it still complemented the other ingredients in the burger well.
Now lets shift our attention to the sidekick and star in disguise – the sweet potato fries. These fries were incredibly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and reminded me a little of beer-battered chips! I’ve had so many lacklustre and limp sweet potato fries, these really lit me up and got me excited 😄
The sauce is the other star of the show. The tomato chilli jam was incredible. The consistency is a little thicker like that of relish, though not spicy at all. Taste-wise it was perfection and a great complement to the burger and fries.
The Satisfying Sandwich was served with a side of air-fried kale chips and spicy vegan mayo. GF and vegan white fluffy sandwich bread is so hard to find so I had to order this!
The mouthwatering description of the sandwich as per menu is that of roasted pumpkin with orange oil and chili flakes, oregano and parsley pesto, pumpkin seeds, onion and artisan vegan chive cream cheese crafted from cashew milk. The sandwich was as splendid as the description, and I enjoyed every bite of this harmonious and decadent combination 😋
Dessert was a healthy Prune and Dark Chocolate Brownie. The brownie was a little bit dry and not as sweet as I would have liked. The ganache was pretty good, rich and bittersweet as described. I think this dessert would have tasted better if the brownie was made sweeter since the accompanying berries, coconut yoghurt and ganache were all on the bittersweet or sour spectrum.
